Rally memorializes those killed on the job

iowa city wmdAmid Johnson County’s construction boom, which has drawn thousands of workers to the area in recent years, labor leaders gathered in the pedestrian mall Tuesday to stress job site safety.

About 50 people turned out for the annual Iowa City Workers Memorial Day rally, where local union heads, elected officials and community members paid tribute to those who were killed on the job last year.

Event organizer Jesse Case, president of the Iowa City Federation of Labor, said there were 38 workplace fatalities in Iowa last year — construction and trucking being the two most dangerous professions — including three deaths of people with local ties:
