Nagle proposes juvenile home be reopened for immigrant children

WATERLOO | Former Democratic congressman Dave Nagle wants to use the closed Iowa Juvenile Home at Toledo to house the estimated 139 unaccompanied immigrant children who have come to Iowa from Central America.

“I’m saying we should reopen the juvenile home as a facility to temporarily house the immigrant children who are within our state,” said Nagle, a Waterloo-Cedar Falls area attorney. “The governor hasn’t tore it down. It has everything those kids would need.

“It’s got recreational facilities. … It’s got classrooms. It’s got beds. It’s got showers. It’s got a kitchen, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t offer it up as a place where they could reside at least temporarily while they’re placed.”
