Much of the current discussion about how to treat public employee personnel files has been a one-sided debate. As the representative of 40,000 public sector and private sector employees, our union wants the public to know the other side of the story.
The contents of personnel files of public employees, including records related to employee discipline, may contain highly private and sensitive information about the employee and members of his or her family. For instance, an employee’s discipline may have resulted from an ongoing illness that affected his work performance. Furthermore, an employee might have been unjustly accused of misconduct but still made a decision to reach a settlement and resign in order to move on with his life.
