Legislators issue statement after Iowa Supreme Court agrees to hear Governor’s appeal

Four legislators – Senators Steve Sodders and Jack Hatch and Representatives Mark Smith and Pat Murphy — who joined a lawsuit to block the closing of the Iowa Juvenile home today issued a  statement upon learning the Iowa Supreme Court would hear Governor Branstad’s appeal of the district court’s decision to reopen the Iowa Juvenile Home:

“We are encouraged that the Iowa Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal of a district court decision that overturned Governor Branstad’s unprecedented and unconstitutional decision to close the Iowa Juvenile Home.  Governor Branstad’s reckless decision to close the Iowa Juvenile Home disrupted the lives of many of Iowa’s troubled children, their families and their communities.

“We continue to believe that reopening a properly managed Iowa Juvenile Home is the best way to ensure the health, safety and education of these children.”
