TPP Teach-in at Waterloo

Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) of Iowa was joined by the Communication Workers of America State Council of Iowa, the Iowa Alliance of Retired Americans, and about 50 community members that braved the -8 degree weather for tonight’s teach-in on the Trans Pacific Partnership and Fast Track. We had a social hour with pizza and beverages starting at 6pm, where we listened to Pete Seeger tunes and watch clips from “The Heist”. ADA member and Waterloo City Councilman Pat Morrissey gave the welcoming and talked about how the TPP would take away the control of local government to pass policies that favor local workers and products.

Jan Laue, President of the Iowa Alliance of Retired Americans, highlighted the history of unfair trade starting with NAFTA and spoke about how the TPP will hurt seniors and raise the cost of prescription drugs. Steve Abbott, President of CWA Iowa State Council, got into more of the details on TPP and how it will hurt workers, outsource more jobs, and hurt the environment. Chris Schwartz, ADA Iowa organizer, explained the history behind Trade Promotion Authority, also know as “Fast Track”, and then got everyone to take action.

Everyone in attendance got out their cellphone and made a call to Senator Grassley’s office jamming his lines with opposition to Fast Track and the TPP. We all then wrote letters to Sen. Grassley, Rep. Tom Latham, and Rep. Steve King.

After the presentation folks stayed around to watch the State of the Union and loudly booed at the President’s brief mention of the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Reporters were in attendance from KWWL, the local NBC affiliate and the Waterloo-Cedar Fallls Courier. The KWWL coverage was to air on tonight’s 10pm broadcast, and again tomorrow during the day.
