They call them heroes, but they are being treated like trash. Congressmen Tom Latham and Steve King recently voted to cut food assistance to close to 17,000 veterans in Iowa. Latham and King voted against the continuation of an increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps.
Nationwide, almost a million veterans will see a major reduction in their assistance through this program. On top of that, there are members of Congress who are looking at cutting Social Security benefits through a chained consumer price index. The chained CPI would impact 3.2 million disabled veterans, over 300,000 low-income veterans and 350,000 surviving spouses and children.
Out of one side of their mouths our elected officials tout our veterans as heroes, then they vote against helping them when they come home. If we are serious about helping our hero vets, then we need to practice what we preach.
