Voters in many parts of Iowa will have the opportunity to cast ballots next month in favor of maintaining property-tax support for this state’s community colleges. It is a vote they should cast with confidence that the money is being well spent.
The question will appear on the Sept. 10 school election ballots in counties covered by seven of Iowa’s 15 area community colleges. These area colleges are asking voters to renew property-tax levies that raise money to build or improve college buildings and to buy classroom equipment. The plant and equipment levies, authorized by the Legislature since 1966, need to be renewed by voters every 10 years.
