|Funnel Week: The First Deadline
This week is the first deadline to winnow the number of bills that are still eligible for debate this session. In order to remain eligible this year, a bill must be approved by a committee in the House or Senate. That means there will be heavy subcommittee and committee work at the State Capitol all week long. There are a lot of bills to keep track of this week so check the full list of bills below to see what you can do to help.
GOP’s War on Women’s Health Care
Republicans have authored yet another bill that tells women what to do with their own bodies. This latest version (SSB 3143) would ban nearly all safe, legal abortions by making it a felony to terminate a pregnancy the moment a fetal heartbeat is detected – before many women even know they are pregnant.
The first subcommittee is tonight at 5 pm at the State Capitol. If you can’t make it to the Capitol in person, please email the lead Republican on the bill Sen. Brad Zaun at email@example.com or leave him a message at 515-281-3371.
Private School Vouchers Are Back Again
After shortchanging our public schools for the last eight years, the GOP is working on a bill this week to create a private school voucher program that would drain money away from public schools across Iowa. Their plan would hit rural areas especially hard and would be a disaster for public schools.
The first meeting on this bill is Tuesday, February 13th at 11 am at the State Capitol. If you can’t attend in person, please contact your own State Representative and the Republican Chair of the House Education Committee Walt Rogers and tell him no private school vouchers in Iowa. Email him at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 515-281-3221.
