Senate To Take Action on Growing GOP Budget Cuts

The Senate GOP plans to pass a bill with $52 million in more budget cuts as early as Tuesday afternoon.  It’s about double the size of cuts proposed by the Governor earlier this month with community colleges and state universities taking half the cuts.  Here’s a quick list highlighting the worst of the GOP’s budget cuts:

  • $5.4 million cut to Iowa’s 15 community colleges will mean higher tuition
  • $19.3 million cut to UNI, ISU, and UI will mean higher tuition
  • $7 million cut to the Skilled Worker Training Fund will mean fewer Iowans can upgrade their skills to land a good job
  • $163,416 cut to services for disabled Iowans (it already has a waiting list of 733 people)
  • $9.9 million cut to Iowa Dept. of Human Services
  • $1.4 million cut to Iowa Dept. of Public Health
  • $4.8 million cut to Judicial Branch which will force them to shut down 30 county courthouses

We need you to contact your Senator and ask him/her to vote NO on Senate File 2117. You can also contact the GOP Appropriations Committee Chair who is running the bill, Sen. Charles Schneider at charles.schneider@legis.iowa.gov or 515-281-3371.
