Borrowing $13 million to cover budget shortfall like ‘rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic’

Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa today called on Iowans to take action, releasing a new website to highlight the Reynolds Budget Crisis that has the state to borrow millions in order to cover for the fiscally irresponsible corporate giveaways put into place by Governor Reynolds.

Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to the announcement made today by the Departments of Management and Revenue that millions must be borrowed due to the Reynolds Budget Crisis:

“Borrowing millions to cover for the Reynolds budget crisis is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, avoiding accountability for her fiscal irresponsibility. The Reynolds budget crisis has reached such a tipping point that the Governor and legislature will be forced to borrow millions to get out of debt. This crisis was created by years of doling out tax giveaways, and we are calling on Iowans to speak out to ensure this debt will not be resolved with further attacks on Iowa’s working families.”

“Iowans are already suffering because of Governor Reynolds’ budget mismanagement, with less access to health care, underfunded schools, and even stooping to a new low of refusing overtime pay for some public employees.”

“It’s shameful that Governor Reynolds continues to prioritize corporate handouts over everyday Iowans. Our students don’t have the resources they need and families are struggling to make ends meet. Moving forward, Governor Reynolds must stop tilting the scale in favor of businesses who aren’t paying their fair share, and restore fiscal responsibility in the budget to address the needs of Iowans.”

Progress Iowa is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization with a network of nearly 70,000 progressives. Year-round, Progress Iowa advocates for a stronger middle class, first-class public education, and fairness for all Iowans under the law. For more information,
