Activist Norm Sterzenbach Sr. dies hours after being honored by Iowa Democrats

The Iowa Democratic Party honored Norm Sterzenbach Sr. of Cedar Rapids on Thursday night for being an outstanding supporter of the party.

About 650 Democrats celebrated his many years of service to the party and he received a shiny plaque.

On Friday morning, his son reported to friends that Sterzenbach, 71, had passed away peacefully in his sleep overnight.

The elder Sterzenbach was a Navy veteran who came to Iowa from Louisville, Ky. He took a job at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids and become a union leader with the Iowa Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“He’s been an activist here in the Democratic Party at all levels. He served the county, district and state central committee for longer than most people can remember,” Norm Sterzenbach Jr. said Thursday night.
