University of Iowa health care union sues the Board of Regents over contract

The Regents oversee University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, and unionized staff say the hospital is not honoring contract negotiations.

Back in February TV9 reported of a nationwide nursing shortage that negatively impacted nurses at UIHC. The nursing labor union SEIU was in the middle of contract negotiations with the hospital.

The union alleges it finally came to an agreement, but the University says otherwise.

Britney Bowen has worked in the neonatal intensive care unit for four and a half years. She says throughout that time, things have changed – It’s been harder and harder for UIHC to get, and keep, nurses.

She says the facility has to rely on traveling nurses, making her job harder. Hospitals contract with nurses from out-of-state for just a few months at a time.
