Repeal of Obamacare will hurt Iowa’s mental health care

mental healthI hope that Gov. Terry Branstad advises President-elect Donald Trump about the devastating impact that a repeal of Obamacare would have on Iowa’s mental health system.

Prior to the 2012 “modernization” of Iowa’s mental health system, counties paid for a large portion of it. In Wapello County alone, we levied for more than $5 million per year in county property taxes to pay for the costs of mental health treatment for our low-income residents.

After that, as part of Obamacare, the state expanded Medicaid coverage to nearly all of the Iowans for whom county government had previously paid for these services. That allowed Wapello County to lower its mental health levy to raise just over $1 million, instead of the $5 million we had been levying before.
