I am Voting for my Union

vote labor day 2016As the election draws near, we need to make sure we have a plan to vote. If you have already voted absentee or early voted, thank you for participating in our democracy. I have talked with many people, either door knocking, phoning or at meetings and many are not too excited about the choices. I understand what you are telling me. I am voting for my union. I am voting to make sure that the union movement that has provided me the opportunity to raise my children, educate them, keep food on the table and roof over their heads. Sound to simple? It’s not hard to come to this conclusion. One party fully embraces the elimination of the trade union movement. One party is in favor of national Right to Work. Our governor for life would like nothing more than to destroy collective bargaining rights for the public sector union members. That party calls for “… legislation that would eliminate all public sector unions.” (Directly from the Republican Party of Iowa platform.) Over the many years I have had the opportunity to vote, I may or may not have had such a clear choice. This election is about the continuation of the labor movement and its ability to function as an equalizer in the struggle with the corporations and the 1%. I am voting for union endorsed candidates. I am voting for my union. Ken Sagar, President, Iowa Federation of Labor
