Families and state officials gathered across from the Capitol Friday to honor workers who died on the job in 2012.
Fifty-one Iowans died from injuries sustained at work or in the military last year. Friends and family from 10 of those workers gathered on the lawn of Iowa Workforce Development for the Workers Memorial Day ceremony, emceed by South Central Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO President Mark Cooper.
Iowa Labor Commissioner Michael Mauro read the names and ages of the workers who lost their lives, and presented the families with glass plaques. “Workplace safety is a responsibility for all of us,” Mauro said.
