Every single Democrat in the Iowa Senate —a majority of the chamber’s members — signed a letter sent to President Barack Obama this week asking for help. Stop Gov. Terry Branstad from privatizing management of our state’s Medicaid program, they urged. Deny his request for federal permission to proceed.
In December, the Obama administration recognized numerous problems and delayed the governor’s planned Jan. 1 implementation date. The senators expressed appreciation for that action, but noted everything they’ve seen and heard since indicates transitioning on March 1 would be no better. “For the sake of the most vulnerable Iowans and their health care providers, we are asking for rejection of this unwise and poorly developed plan,” they wrote.
Reject it. Amen. The president should instruct his administration to do exactly that.
