DES MOINES, Iowa – Sen. Tom Harkin, fleshing out his plans after leaving the Senate, says he’s going to focus on what he sees as progressive issues but will avoid traditional partisan political issues.
“First of all I’m getting heavily involved with the Harkin Institute and that’s nonpartisan,” said Harkin, in a wide-ranging interview. “You will not see me out campaigning for candidates. I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to be endorsing or campaigning against Republicans.”
It will be a new direction for Harkin, one of the most successful Democratic politicians in the history of the state, who frustrated Republicans for most of his adult life by routinely defeating the best candidates the GOP could recruit to run against him.
