Editorial: State must change ‘do-not-hire list’

IMG_4561Given the fact that thousands of people work for the state of Iowa, it makes sense that the state would assemble some sort of a list of past workers who shouldn’t be considered for re-hiring.

That said, the state’s notorious “do-not-hire list” is both ill-conceived and poorly constructed. It now contains the names of 943 people who are ineligible to work for some or all executive branch departments or agencies. Sixty-seven of those individuals were added to the list this past year, despite concerns that the list is, if not illegal, unethical.

As Sen. Janet Petersen, a Des Moines Democrat, said the state seems to be setting itself up for a lawsuit.
